Tokyo, Japan
Windy and Sunny Morning
Over a month ago, I organized an outing to Kabukicho in Shinjuku to see the infamous Robot Restaurant Show that Anthony Bourdain made famous here. I've lived in Tokyo for a total about 5 years now but have never been to Kabukicho which is the red light district of Tokyo in Shinjuku. And neither have my friends including 2 native Tokyo-ites!
We arrived around 530pm to the venue which was not too easy to find. 530pm is early for Tokyo nightlife but we ran into a couple of very drunk 50ish guys and many "hosts" getting ready for the nite. The "hosts" which entertain women, I'm sorry, are very weird looking with their dyed hair that is not blond and not brown but I hate to say diarhea like hair color. This is part of Japan that I will never understand.
Anyhow, we got there, used the bathroom which were impeccably clean and entered the over the top in mirrors and lights Robot Restaurant. I thought they show would start immediately, but no, were where first escorted to the lounge for a drink. In the lounge we listended to well "lounge music" played by 2 men and a women dressed like they were from outerspace. But they were good!
After about 30-40 minutes in the lounge, we were then escorted to the basement where the show starts. I have to say it is very unique. It was fun, loud, sensory overload but don't think I'll ever go again. The show is kid friendly which is weird as it is in the heart of the red light district. Anyhow, if you go, don't have the bento dinner there and do not see the show if you have a headache or are sensitive to light!
