Some of you might recall from this post, that on the last day in Argentina, I had an incident with a necklace I bought from a local artist in the middle of the Andes. I call the necklace, the Titanic, as it reminded me of that famous necklace in James Cameron's movie "The Titanic". It actually was the most expensive thing I bought while in Argentina for myself. The pendant stone is an amethyst (flawed) with a small ruby as an accent. And the necklace is made from silver. I have no idea if it's real or not but for 150USD, why not. Plus I was helping out a struggling jewelry designer.
I never wore the necklace while in Salta area and kept it safe in a secret hiding place. But when I got to BA, I decided to put it in the safety deposit box in the hotel room as I wanted to wear it to the Tango show we were going to see. So imagine my surprise when looking to get the necklace, it was MISSING! Sandra and I scoured the hotel room and I unpacked my suitcases, etc looking for the necklace. I thought I was LOSING MY MIND, because I was pretty sure I put it in the safet deposit box. After searching for about 2hrs, gave up, became depressed, but got myselft together for the tango show. I reminded myself again, to never buy nice jewelry. As some of you might know, when I returned from Japan, all my nice jewelry, watches and heirlooms from my parents, were all stolen as someone came into my house and took my safety deposit box. Dealing with the insurance company at that time was a nightmare so I vowed to never spend monies on jewelry again.
The next day after not sleeping well, cuz of the missing necklace, looked again in the AM but could not find it. So we did our La Boca and Puerto Madera sightseeing trip. I thought I lost the necklace forever, but Sandra thought that when I get back, I will find it somewhere in my suitcase. Anyhow, Sandra also said we should report it to the hotel staff when we check out. So we did although we could NOT imagine if anyone came in, somehow opened the safety deposit box and just took the necklace when we had our cameras, monies, etc in it. The hotel staff said they will have security check out the room one more time. I was like, OK, but pretty sure it was gone. I went with them to the room and as they were looking everywhere and also inside the safety deposit box, they FOUND IT! It was caught between the edge of the door of the box! The ironic thing is that when we left for the tango show last night, we could not get the safety deposit box to lock. We had to call maintenance to reset. So the necklace must have been the cause of the malfunction.
Anyhow, I was SO HAPPY to have found it that I gave the two security guards a hug. Since I did not want to lose it again, I wore it all the way back to Los Angeles. The necklace will always remind me of the kind, generous and friendly people I met in Argentina.
