Malibu, CA
Foggy but Warm
Had a very strange day yesterday, Thursday the 29th of December. I got back from Boulder on the 28th and it was uneventful. Ms. Yuki was exhausted after a week of fun with Aunt Amy and Uncle Michael and so was I so I basically just unpacked and went straight to bed. Got up around 530am to find out that ATT wireless had no signal in Malibu again. They supposedly are improving the coverage in Malibu but this has been going on for 2 full years so I was not surprised. Yuki did not want to get up as usual, so I putzed around the house, cleaning and getting things re-organized. Took Yuki for a beautiful walk at Malibu Bluffs Park (her favorite), stopped at PC Greens for some organic tofu and veggies, then headed home.
All set to check work emails and get to work but realized I lost my broadband connection! Called Verizon, they did lots of test lasting over an hour only to say that they have to send a technician and that the technician will be there anytime between 10am and 6pm! So basically, I'm stuck waiting for the Verizon guy the whole day! Not having internet connection is a big problem for me as I do not have cable/satellite and can't do anything except make analog phone calls and..... read! So that's what I did. What a luxury to read all day without getting interrupted to check email, etc.
However, Ms. Yuki did have to go to the bathroom during the middle of the day so decided to walk her around the neighborhood instead of venturing out to our usual afternoon beach walk. I told Joe the guard to my condo association to keep an eye out for the Verizon guy as I walk Yuki. And that's when we met Lucy. A skinny but friendly dog who scared the sh**t out of me, when she came hopping towards us from the bushes. I first thought she was a coyote! Anyhow, she was microchipped and had tags so I was able to contact the owners after several tries. She turned out to be a deaf, old and very sweet dog. Ms. Yuki, however, was not amused as Lucy ate all of her food and attempted to play with her toys. So I had my hands full for about an hour or so. The owners finally made it to my place, picked up Lucy and all was well for awhile. Poor Yuki, all she wanted to do today was sleep, but so much activity!
Next up was the Verizon guy who showed up around 5pm. And it took him a good 2.5hours to get my broadband working again. God knows what was wrong as I could not get a straight answer. And a lesson learned. I should have checked my computers etc before I let him leave. I ended up on the phone with Verizon for an hour or so to re-configure my 2 laptops, mobile phone, blu-ray recorder, Apple TV etc. By then I was so frustrated that I decided to see a good BBC crime drama to relax (yes to relax!). I ended up falling a sleep and got woken up by a hooting of an owl!
I wondered if it's the killer owl that went after our complex's cat the other day. Anyhow, it was perched up on my upstairs balcony and seemed to be interested in Yuki (not as a friend but a meal). And it would not go away. I was too timid to go out on the balcony to "shoo it" ( I've been attacked by an owl before so was quite afraid of it - it's another story). Yuki was beside herself barking and growling at the owl but the owl just sat there.(Yuki was doing this from the safety of the sliding glass doors) Then I remembered reading about someone in Malibu area shooting owls and hanging them by their feet on trees. And I remember thinking how cruel can people be. Yes, they eat cats and small dogs but they don't kill for "fun". So then I just looked at the owl and told him how sorry I am that some humans are just cruel. And then he/she took off. I can't believe I did not have my camera with me. It was quite a site. So from now on, I have my DSLR fully charged and next to me when home at night.
By then, with all the excitement and activities, Yuki and I were exhausted to call it a nite. It was a restless night though with lots of weird dreams for me and Yuki (she was sleep talking ALOT). And now that I write about it, it doesn't seem to be as strange as how it felt yesterday. There must have been something in the air.....
Lucy, a surprise visitor from yesterday
