Sunny, Clear and Cool
While on holiday in Cabo San Lucas, I finally had time to enjoy reading and read perhaps one of the best works of American fiction - American Pastoral by Philip Roth. Roth's writing is so meticulous and perfect that like Henry Miller has made me lose even more confidence in my writing ability. The story itself is about a Jewish man nicknamed "Swede" who seemed to be destined to live the perfect American like during the 50s and 60s. We learn from the book not only is his life turned upside down but we also learn from Roth the psyche of the American household during the turmulent years of Vietnam War up to the Watergate scandal. This book should be on every person's bookshelf. It is that good.
