Gorgeous
I just arrived from Tokyo and busy catching up on emails, doing laundry, getting organized, etc, but realized I haven't been diligent about posting the books I've read. I've been pretty good recently, slowly getting back to my one book a month average. While in Brazil, I read 2.5 books (The Namesake, The Help and 1/2 of Shantaram). While in Vegas, Japan - finished Shantaram, and now I'm reading Memoirs of a Geisha. Hopefully, I'll finish that book by next weekend. That means 1/2 of the 1st box of books would have been read. 4 more boxes to go before I buy a Kindle/iPad. Hmm, don't know if I'll make it. I might succumb to an iPad soon.
Anyhow, luved all the books I read. The Namesake was a powerful yet simple book about an Indian family who emigrated to America. It was written by Jhumpa Lahiri and is only her second book. She's got to be one of the most talented American authors (her first book one a Pulitzer prize). I recommend the book.
The second book I read (and in 1.5days) was The Help by Kathryn Stockett. What's shocking is the author is Caucasian. However, I felt she did a fabulous job telling the story through an intelligent maid living in the South in the 60s. I was reading it while enjoying the sun in front of the Sheraton that was not an "officially" segregated beach but certainly did feel like it. Again, another must read for Amercans so we don't forget what life was like for some of our brothers and sisters.
The last book Shantaram requires commitment, it is about 1000 pages long. But the book is colorful, suspenseful and delicious. The book is fiction but incorprates the experiences of the author. The auther was a convict, who escaped to India, lived in a slum, managed a clinic there and also got messed up with the Indian mafia. Fascinating book. Made me want to go to India even more.
And now I'm finally reading "Memoirs of a Geisha" since I experienced by first dinner with a Tokyo Geisha. So far its been an easy read. Hopefully, I'll have it finished this weekend to report on it.
