Malibu, California
A Sad Day
Last Wednesday, while preparing dinner for the animals, I realized Professor has not come back from his daily stroll outside. So I started tapping the can of his food, calling his name and still no sign of Professor. It still was light outside as it was around 7pm, so off I went strolling through the neighborhood tapping the can and calling his name. But he did not come back. After a week of searching and hoping he was vacationing at someone's house, I've came to the conclusion I lost him to the coyotes. I've had people say that they have seen many coyotes out in the daytime recently. Professor has always been a tough cat so I never thought he would be a victim of a coyote, especially in daylight.
He came to me with his sibling Gilligan as kittens in NYC. I adopted them from Bide a Wee on 37th street 13 years ago. Both were found malnourished in a crack house in Brooklyn. They were very very sick and had to be on medicine for a good 6 months. They immediately bonded with Skipper although Skipper was not too sure about them. However, as they respected Skipper, we were one happy family. Both of them moved to California with me and Skipper and loved the life in Malibu. Although they were indoor cats and I wanted them to stay that way, the lure of the outside was too much for them in Malibu. I lost Gilligan the second year I moved to Malibu and thought he was lost to the coyotes but later found he somehow made it to Malibu Colony and was living the life of a celebrity cat. Professor stayed with me though and when I had to move to Japan, I had to make a difficult decision to leave him in Malibu as I could not see him go back to high rise living. So for the 3 years while I was in Japan, Professor was treated as the King of the House as I had people stay at my place rent free just to take care of the cat.
Perhaps it was not being the King anymore with Skipper and a new addition Yuki-chan joining the household which made him want to spend a lot of time outside. I'll never know. But I know he knows he has been loved and I have lit incense from Bhutan to make his travels across the rainbow easy. Enjoy paradise Professor and keep on dancing!
