San Diego, California
AM: June Gloom, PM: Sun
So had a biz trip to San Diego. Last day of meetings but so exhausted cuz couldn't sleep due to bar activity at the hotel and planes zipping by. Had a pretty full day today because I started early but went brain dead around 5pm. So called it a day at work, and decided to take a walk around the neighborhood, get some take out and have an early night. But while walking found a Roy's Restaurant from Hawaii. Luv that place and when I'm tired I crave rice and Asian food. So decided to splurge and have a nice dinner there. Well, I hesitate on placing it in my "Fav SoCal Restaurants" category cuz it wasn't worth the price, honestly. The service was fabulous but the food was mediocre. The restaurant in Hawaii and Tokyo are so much better. But it did serve my rice craving and also the fab service de-stressed me so I will recommend it, but not for dinner. Go there for lunch or Happy Hour cuz they have great deals. And yes, I'm off my detox (non-allergenic) diet for the past two days which could explain the lethargy.....
I had the best seat at the "chef's table". So saw all the action.
Edamame stir fried in Roy's teriyaki sauce and finished with toasted sesame seeds. This dish was the highlight of the meal and was served as compliments from the chef. It was very good. I'm going to have to experiment at home to replicate.
Lobster gyoza (dumplings). OK. I had a similar dish in Japan where the gyoza skin was much more delicate so it was tastier. The gyoza skin served here was too thick.
White fish crusted with Macadamia nuts on rice. It's usually served with potatoes. I remember having this in Hawaii and loved it. The crust was soggy and the fish was not very fresh in my opinion. But the rice was cooked perfectly.
Roy's in San Diego. Service was fabulous. Food so-so. Go for lunch and Happy Hour. Overpriced for dinner given the quality in my opinion.
